Red Headed Bush Cockroach

RED-HEAD BUSH COCKROACH CAPE TOWN

Ever seen a big cockroach about 3 inches long with red legs, red head and sometimes wings on it? They are called the Bush Cockroach. Normally found in outdoor environments like leaf litter, tree barks and wood piles. Although scary looking these roaches are harmless and more like lovers of nature rather than being a nuisance like the American and German Cockroach we so well know occupying our homes without permission.

Originally known as the Eurycotis Floridana the Red-Headed Bush Cockroach forms part of the Blattidae family and cousins to the common American Cockroach and Oriental Cockroach. The males have wings  and can fly short distances but they prefer to glide and crawl instead due to them not being very strong flyers.

Very social and living in small groups within the outdoor environment they are unlikely to be seen during the day and most active at night when it’s much cooler and humid making summer the perfect breeding season. They are omnivores and eat organic matter, decaying plant material, fungi and small bits of animal matter making them the perfect natural decomposers playing their role in our ecosystem.
